Welcome
from the Program Director
Heather Laird-Fick, MD, MPH, FACP
It is
my pleasure to introduce you to the Michigan State University
Internal Medicine Residency Program. We are committed to training
residents who will constantly pursue excellence. We strive
to provide a challenging yet supportive atmosphere, where
autonomy and supervision are in dynamic balance. MSU is a
truly energizing training site, fueled by a proactive team
spirit.
Our residents
have an outstanding record of success in achieving their goals,
including subspecialty and primary care careers. The MSU internal
medicine curriculum is nationally acclaimed. To prepare you
for success in your chosen career, we have created a flexible
program with a wide range of elective training opportunities.
Residents have the opportunity to pursue research, rotate
on subspecialty services, and pursue non-medicine specialty
rotations. In addition, we have numerous volunteer community
faculty who support primary care experiences at their ambulatory
offices.
Located
in East Lansing, Michigan State University is one of the largest
universities in the United States. With over 40,000 students,
the campus supports a significant international population
of faculty, students, and support personnel. Our affiliated
hospital teaching sites are located in neighboring Lansing,
Michigan, which is the Michigan state capital. The metro-Lansing
area serves rural farming populations in the greater mid-Michigan
area. The extensive socioeconomic diversity of the combined
Lansing-East Lansing population supports a stimulating training
experience with broad diagnostic challenges.
Our faculty
is committed to educational excellence. The Michigan State
University College of Human Medicine is nationally recognized
as a leader in medical education, and as a leading primary
care medical school. Our training hospitals have been repeatedly
recognized by U.S. News for national “top 50”
care in numerous specialties. Our residency enjoys full ACGME
accreditation status, a reflection of our well structured
curriculum. The Program Director and residency faculty have
received national and regional awards for teaching excellence.
Our residency
program is committed to your success. We maintain a supportive
small-group atmosphere that is well suited to creating strong
bonds between residents, faculty, and patients. Whatever your
professional goals may be, at MSU you will complete your transformation
from “student” to “physician” while
forming friendships that will last a lifetime.
I hope
you enjoy the information available on our website. Do not
hesitate to contact us for any questions.
