Dr. Smith earned his M.D. at the University of Iowa and his
M.S. at Harvard University's School of Public Health in Clinical
Epidemiology. His research interests include doctor-patient
communications and relationships, medically unexplained symptoms,
somatization, teaching patient-centered interviewing, and other
psychosocial principles. Dr. Smith is interested in the role
of research to improve psychosocial practices and as a vehicle
to gain acceptance, evidenced by rigorous teaching of psychosocial
practices in the mainstream of primary care.
