Pothula, MD, Nandu Gourineni, MD, Aparna Punnam , MD, Venkateshan Ranganathan, MD.; Published in March issue of the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology.
 
  Madhusudan Grover, MD has been selected for an abstract presentation: Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth in Irritable Bowel Syndrome; Association with Colon Mobility, Bowel Symptoms, and Psychological Distress at the 6th Annual National Meeting of the Functional Brain-Gut Research Groups Functional GI Disorders Young Investigators' Forum in La Jolla, California April 11-13, 2008. This is a prestigious organization in the field of functional GI and Mobility Disorders. Congratulations!
 
  Dr. Nitesh Gadeela's research abstract "Can Recurrence of Inappropriate ICD Therapy be prevented?" has been accepted fro presentation at European Cardiac Arrhythmia Society 2008 (ECAS 2008) Meeting in Marseille, France and will later be published in the Journal of Interventional Cardiac Electrophysiology (JICE) .
 
 

Abhijeet Dhoble, MD co-authored an abstract titled "Use of Beta Blockers, Lipid Lowering agents, and Angiotensin Converting Enzyme - Inhibitors Before Recurrent Acute Myocardial Infarction" that has been accepted for presentation at the National SGIM Meeting in Philadelphia.

 
  Nitesh Gadeela, MD presented his abstract " Utility of Isoproterenol During Catheter Abliation of Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation" at the November 2007 American Heart Association meeting in Orlando, Florida with subsequent publication in the supplement of the circulation. He also had his article
 
  October 2007 - Dr. Shalabh Chandra has been selected for induction into Alpha Omega Alpha, an international medical honor society, as a resident member. this is a prestigious and competitive honor. Congratulations!
 
  Dr. Ashwani Gupta presented his poster a the National Kidney Foundations Spring 2007 Clinical Meeting. The abstract is the application of time series models of biological systems. There are very few papers in medicine using time series analysis. It was also published in the April issue of the American Journal of Kidney Disease (AJKD).

Internal Medicine 2007, formerly Annual Session, is ACP's premier medical education meeting. It was held in San Diego, California, April 19 - 21, 2007 at the San Diego Convention Center.

  At the Chest 2006 meeting, PGY3 resident Amit Gupta presented important retrospective data regarding use of nebulizers and asthma-related deaths. According a Medscape quote from Peter R. Smith, MD, chief of the Division of Pulmonary Medicine at Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn, New York: "This is clearly one of the most original findings that I've heard at this meeting for pulmonologists in a tertiary care setting, where we are still looking for answers." The results of Amit’s work have been widely featured on Medscape, MedlinePlus, Yahoo news, and Forbes.
 
  In honor of his outstanding oral case presentation at the 2006 ACP Michigan Chapter meeting, Amarbir Mattewal (PGY3) has been selected by the American College of Physicians Michigan Chapter to attend the national 2007 ACP meeting in San Diego with all expenses paid.
 
  Shalabh Chandra, MD was awarded Honorable Mention in the 2006 Johns Hopkins General Internal Medicine Housestaff Research Awards competition, for his submission titled Role of Pre-operative Stress Myocardial Perfusion Scan in Cancer Patients Undergoing Non-Cardiac Surgery and their Outcomes.
 
  The 2006 Fall ACP/ASIM Michigan Chapter Scientific Meeting was held on September 21-23, 2006 in Traverse City, Michigan.

Two residents were chosen to give oral presentations this year.

The Lansing Research Day was held on the campus of Michigan State University, May 2006.

  • Dr. Roshan Patel earned 1st prize for his research poster on "Aspirin Significantly Reduces Excimer Laser Induced Platelet Aggregation".
  • Dr. Sachin Gupta earned 1st prize for his clinical case poster, "A Not so Unusual Cause of Near Fatal Lactic Acidosis in the Intensive Care Unit."
  • Dr. Shalabh Chandra received "Best Case Study Poster".
  • Dr. Oluchi Opara presented a case report, "an unusual case of HAART related lipodystrophy presenting as bladder neck abstruction ."
  • Dr. Oluchi Opara presented a case report, "California group Viruses presenting as peripheral neuropathy in an adult." Dr. Oluchi also presented these two case studies at the ACP Associates meeting in May of 2006.
 
  The Paget’s Disease Foundation International Symposium was held in Fort Lauderdale, FL in January 2006.
  • Dr. Mohammad Pervaiz gave an oral presentation entitled Osteoporosis: A Potential Mimicker of Paget’s Disease. He received many complimentary comments after his presentation and had the opportunity to interact with international experts.
 
  The following posters were presented at the upcoming American Medical Association Resident and Fellow Session (RFS) in November 2005.
  • Testicular and Epidydimal Involvement in Sarcoidosis presented by Amarbir Mattewal.
  • Meperidine Induced Eosinophilia presented by Amit Gupta.
  • Thyrotoxic Hypokalemic Periodic Paralysis presented by Amit Gupta.
 
  GMEI residents continue to make outstanding showings at regional scientific meetings. The 2005 Fall ACP/ASIM Michigan Chapter Scientific Meeting was held September 22, 2005.

Molly Caldwell-McMillan, MD won second prize for her oral presentation entitled: Severe Unrecognized Hypocalcemia Secondary to Vitamin D Deficiency. Judges were especially impressed with her excellent slides.

  The Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM) Fall Michigan Chapter Meeting was held on September 30, 2005.

The 2005 Spring ACP Michigan Chapter Associates Day was held May 6, 2005 in Detroit, Michigan.

Kiran Sarikonda, Atul Khasnis, Amarbir Mattewal, and Molly Caldwell-McMillan represented MSU in the Doctor's Dilemma "Jeopardy" quiz competition and placed 2nd out of the eleven residencies in the competition.

Our residents also presented the following posters at the meeting:

  • Development of Glioblastoma in Multiple Sclerosis: A Diagnostic Dilemma presented by Adriano Tonelli, M.D. who received 3rd Place in the Clinical Abstract competition (out of 148 poster abstracts presented at the meeting).
  • Kallman Syndrome: Late diagnosis and unusual presentation presented by Amit Gupta, M.D.
  • Post surgical meningitis due to Lactobacillus in an immunocompetent patient presented by Amarbir Mattewal. M.D.
  • Acquired hemophilia in a patient with Castleman's Disease presented by Venkata Parsa, M.D.
  • Kaposi's varicelliform eruption - a case report presented by Kiran Sarikonda, M.D.
  • Cytomegalovirus retinitis as a serious concern in tolerogenic immunosuppressive regimens presented by Anand Tandra, M.D.
  • Epididymo-orchitis with abscess in a diabetic patient caused by Candida glabrata presented by MaryAnn Tran, M.D.
 
 

The 2004 Fall ACP/ASIM Michigan Chapter Scientific Meeting was held September 30 - October 3, 2004 at the Grand Traverse Resort in Traverse City Michigan. The residents presented the following posters at the competition:

  • Malposition of pacemaker lead in the left ventricle: clinical and radiographic features presented by Sharat Mayya, M.D, who received an honorable mention.
  • A case of ventricular tachycardia (VT) after acetaminophen (AC) overdose presented by Zaher Al-Shallah, M.D.
  • A case report of HTLV-1 associated myelopathy / tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP) in Michigan, USA presented by Amir Azeem, M.D.
  • Brain abcess in hereditary hemorrhagic telagiectasia - a case report and Relapsing polychondritis and myelodysplasia - a case report presented by Kiran Sarikonda, M.D.
  • A case of reduced warfarin sensitivity secondary to hypothyroidism presented by Kristofer Dosh, M.D.
  • Atypical lymphocytosis secondary to disseminated histoplasmosis in a patient being treated with Infliximab and Fulminant cytomegalgaloviral pneumonia after Infliximab in a patient with Crohn's disease presented by Asad Mohmand, M.D.
  • An unusual case of TTP-HUS resulting from low-estrogen containing oral contraceptive and Nytroglycerin-induced asystole presented by Sandeep Sohal, M.D.
 
 

The 2004 Spring ACP/ASIM Michigan Chapter Scientific Meeting was held May 7, 2004 at Providence Hospital in Southfield, Michigan. Two of our senior residents received awards.


  • Dr. Mini Kamboj, with her third prize winning poster at the 2004 Spring ACP Associates Meeting
    Dr. Dexter Estrada received third place for his oral presentation entitled "Radiometric Quantitation of PAIgG Stratifies Treatment Responce In ITP Patients.". Dr. Estrada completed the project with John M. Davis and Dr. Schwartz.
  • Dr. Mini Kamboj received third place for one of her two posters, which were entitled "Is the epidemiology of non-HIV brain abscesses changing: A five-year review from a community hospital" and "Staphylococcus aureus resistant to macrolides: Should Clindamycin be used?" Both efforts were completed under the supervision of Dr. Kak, and with Dr. Khalife for the second.
 
 

The 2003 Fall ACP/ASIM Michigan Chapter Scientific Meeting was held September 18-21, 2003 at the Grand Traverse Resort in Traverse City Michigan. The residents presented the following posters at the competition:

  • A Case Series of Patients with Inadvertent Iatrogenic Implantable Cardioverter Defibrilator Deactivation presented by by Kwsai Al-Rallah, M.D.
  • Severe Transaminase Elevation in Patients with Hepatitus A Using HMG-COA Reductase Inhibitors presented by Kristofer Dosh, M.D..
  • An Unusual Case of Disseminated Aspergillosis in an Intensive Care Patient presented by Dr. Kristofer Dosh.(Honorable mention)
  • A Rare Case of Relapsing Polychondritus presented by Ehab Eltahawy, M.D.
  • Epidemiology and Outcomes of Clostridial Bacteremia in a Community Hospital presented by Apoorv Kalra, M.D.
  • Chronic Vulvar Pruritus: An Atypical Presentation of Sarcoidosis presented by Mini Kamboj, M.D.
  • Successful Endovascular Management of Extensive Lower Extremity Deep Venous Thrombosis in May-Thurner Syndrome presented by Asad Mohmand, M.D.
  • Coma in the Intensive Care Unit-An Unusual Case presented by Venkata Parsa, M.D.
  • Idiopathic Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone presented by Mehdi Khosravi, M.D.

Also at the Annual meeting, Dexter Estrada, M.D. was asked to display his 2003 Associates Day 1st place Competition poster titled: A Very Fascinating Case of Combined Immunocytopenia with IgG Antibodies Against Red Cells, Platelets, and Granulocytes.

 
 

2003 FASEB (Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology) Summer Research Conference in Vermont

Venkata Parsa, M.D. presented a poster titled "Factor XIII Deficiency is Clinically Under Recognized" at the national summer research conference for the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology.
