Call Schedules

The call schedule by year is outlined below. We place limits on admissions and have established admissions guidelines to ensure that service is not compromised and education is maximized.

Typical Call Duties

PGY1
Firm Group: Long call (7am-7pm) is approximately Q5-6 days with 3-4 additional short calls (2pm-6pm) per rotation. The intern on long call starts admissions after 5pm.

Cardiology : 2 weekend calls.

ICU Rotations: Q4-6 days

PGY2 and 3

Firm Group: Call is from 7am-7pm ONLY. While at Sparrow, call is Q3 days.

ICU/CCU: Q4 days

Night Float: (8pm-8am) 21 days out of a 28 day block. Seniors take 4-8 weeks of night float per year.
3pm - 11pm Swing
9pm - 7am Night Float

Limits on admissions

PGY1
5 new patients per 24 hours
8 new patients per 48 hours

PGY2 and 3
10 new patients per 24 hours
16 new patients per 48 hours
Includes first-year resident’s admissions

Protection from admissions post-call

  • No new patients after 24 hours on duty
  • Leave when work completed (by 12-1:00pm)
  • Opportunity to rest when on duty 24 hours
  • No post-call clinics
  • Night float system
