Observership Criteria
Observership Criteria
Overview
We sponsor a limited number of Observerships at Sparrow Hospital. Observers rotate for a maximum of four weeks with our academic general medicine inpatient Firm service. We do not sponsor ambulatory observerships.
Observers must adhere to Sparrow Hospital regulations, referenced below.
Conferences
We value the dynamic interactions of our small group teaching sessions. Therefore, only observers sponsored by our program may attend Teaching Rounds and core conferences. Observers will be excused from Teaching Rounds if more than eight learners are present on any given day.
We reserve the following conferences for internal medicine residents only:
- Morbidity and Mortality (first Thursday of each month)
- EKG (first Thursday of each month)
- Board Review (weekly at 2 pm)
- Town Meetings (fourth Thursday of each month)
- Special procedure workshops (intermittent)
Grand Rounds presentations are open to the medical community at large.
Regulations
Observers are unlicensed and can only function as an observer.
Observers may participate in educational rounds, conferences and other Medical Education activities as directed by the attending faculty.
Observers will maintain confidentiality and have signed the Sparrow Confidentiality Agreement.
Observers may have patient contact ONLY within the following limits:
• Must not do any physical examination of a patient
• May only verbally interact with a patient with his/her approval and in the presence of a Senior Resident or Attending Physician who will be responsible for ensuring appropriate, professional and accurate communications.
Observers will not write in the medical record, although they may be given "mock" documentation exercises to practice documentation and have skills assessed outside of the official medical record. Observers understand that they must receive instruction on aseptic technique and that during surgery or any procedure, may not be near the surgical field or table, but may observe the activity with other members of the team. Observers will follow the directions of the physician or supervising nurse.
Observers have obtained sponsorship by a Sparrow Hospital, Affiliated Residency Program or Medical Staff Member.
