Dr. Dwamena received her medical degree from Howard University and completed residency in Internal Medicine at Emory University Affilliated Hospitals. She is a fellow of the AAMC Heath Services Research Institiue and has a Master of Science degree in Epidemiology. Dr. Dwamena has also completed a fellowship in psychosocial medicine. Her research focuses on using the principles of effective doctor-patient relationships to understand and manage patients’ symptoms. She has been a principal investigator of an intramural grant, a minority supplement award, and a co-investigator of an RO1 from the national Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). She also has numerous publications and presentations on the topic of healthcare communication and its clinical application to patients with medically unexplained symptoms. In 2006, her workshop on medically unexplained symptoms was selected for the Midwest region Society of General Internal Medicine Outstanding Workshop award. She was also the only faculty member to be elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha chapter at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine in that year. As associate director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program, she directs journal club, research, and the ambulatory rotation. She is also co-director of the psychosocial rotation
