About the Lansing Area

Capitol buildingLocated centrally in the state, Lansing is Michigan's capital city with a metropolitan area population of approximately 130,000, with the greater Lansing area and environs nearing 480,000. State government, General Motors, and Michigan State University are the area's major employers. Northern Michigan, one of the premier vacation spots in the country, and two of the state's Great Lakes are within a few hours drive. Lansing has maintained the ambience of a much smaller town with rural beauty, recreational variety, and cultural opportunities. There are a number of museums, including: Impression 5 Science Center, R. E. Olds Museum, Michigan Women's Historical Center and Hall of Fame, and the Michigan Historical Museum. The city of East Lansing, home to Michigan State University, is a short 10 minute drive from the state capitol building.

Oldsmobile ParkThe Lansing area also offers a variety of performing arts options, including Boarshead Theater, Riverwalk Theater, and the Greater Lansing Symphony Orchestra. Other educational and recreational sites include: The Lansing Art Gallery, Potter Park Zoo, Lake Lansing Park, Fenner Arboretum, Old Town Main Street, and Oldsmobile Park, a minor league baseball stadium that is home to the Lansing Lugnuts.

The university is located in close proximity to several communities, including East Lansing, that are noted for beautiful, charming neighborhoods and excellent public school systems. Lansing area residents enjoy a lower cost of living relative to other cities in the United States, including more affordable housing. Residents are also eligible for low-cost, on-campus apartments.
