About
the Lansing Area
Located
centrally in the state, Lansing is Michigan's capital city
with a metropolitan area population of approximately 130,000,
with the greater Lansing area and environs nearing 480,000.
State government, General Motors, and Michigan State University
are the area's major employers. Northern Michigan, one of
the premier vacation spots in the country, and two of the
state's Great Lakes are within a few hours drive. Lansing
has maintained the ambience of a much smaller town with rural
beauty, recreational variety, and cultural opportunities.
There are a number of museums, including: Impression
5 Science Center, R. E. Olds Museum, Michigan Women's
Historical Center and Hall of Fame, and the Michigan Historical
Museum. The city of East Lansing, home to Michigan State University,
is a short 10 minute drive from the state capitol building.
The
Lansing area also offers a variety of performing arts options,
including Boarshead Theater, Riverwalk
Theater, and the Greater Lansing Symphony Orchestra. Other
educational and recreational sites include: The
Lansing Art Gallery, Potter Park Zoo, Lake Lansing Park,
Fenner Arboretum, Old
Town Main Street, and Oldsmobile Park, a minor league
baseball stadium that is home to the Lansing
Lugnuts.
The
university is located in close proximity to several communities,
including East Lansing, that are noted for beautiful, charming
neighborhoods and excellent public school systems. Lansing
area residents enjoy a lower cost of living relative to other
cities in the United States, including more affordable housing.
Residents are also eligible for low-cost, on-campus
apartments.
